Thinking and Writing about Digital Media

Pleasure
There are many forms of media I utilize and consume to find joy, pleasure, happiness, and contentment. Movies, tv shows, video games, music, social media, and theatre are all forms of creativity that I use to de-stress, connect with others, and have fun. I often watch movies and tv shows or play games with others in social settings. Through these activities, I am able to enjoy a story with others and talk with my friends. These forms of media are enjoyable because the story lines and characters. There is also nostalgia associated with different movies or games. Music and theatre help me feel emotions and help me find joy in life. Social media allows me to connect with friends. Also, creating music, theatre, and art bring me pleasure. “Men are that they might have joy” and I believe these forms of media were put on the earth to help accomplish this goal.

Provide Information
As a student, both in school and in life, I consume great amounts of media in order to learn. Many classes require readings and videos that come in different formats: textbooks, novels, YouTube videos, TED talks, and scientific studies. As a theatre artist, I watch theatre as a form of research to improve my craft as a critic, director, actor, and designer. Theatre contains many forms of media that add to the experience: lights, set, costumes, makeup, music, sound effects, playbills, projections, and the performance of the actors. To enhance my theatre creation, I have read many scripts and articles, watched videos, researched philosophies and historical events, and looked for different forms of inspiration. I’m interested in personal growth and I’ve read self-improvement books and watched videos from sociologists.

Services
Email has become a tool I use to communicate with professionals, colleagues, and businesses. I use social media to inform and advertise to friends and family about performances I am associated with. I’ve also used social media to communicate with casts and crews of plays I am involved in. Texting can be used to remind my sister about my mom’s birthday or to ask my stage manager to send out an email to the cast.

Pervasive Media
I use the term pervading to describe the media I consume that I did not seek out. This includes the myriad of advertisements that are constantly present on social media, YouTube, movie previews, product placement, and name brands on products. We all consume great amounts of commercialized media every day.

Personal Guidelines
I have to be careful when I use media for pleasure. Sometimes, I use it to numb out problems and emotions, which can be detrimental because the problems do not go away, they just become hidden. Another guideline is consuming media that improves my emotional, mental, and spiritual health. There can be great good and great evil in media. Finally, I try to create media that is meaningful to myself and others.

Media for Teachers/Students
Teachers can use media to engage students and appeal to their interests. Additionally, media supports concepts you are teaching by drawing upon the voices of professionals. Students can easily allow media to distract them from their studies, but they can also use it to support their learning.

  1. Wow. I LOVE that you talk about emotional, mental and spiritual health. That's such a wholistic view of the way that media can help/harm us and I really like it. I'm going to start thinking about that when I consume/create media.

  2. Michael,

Good job looking through the different types of media that you consume and interact with. I am grateful that you touch on the different needs that media helps to fill. As stated, theatre is an art form composed of many different media elements. As a teacher, what purposeful ways can you use media in your theatre classroom? How can you help your students to discover what media is helpful, informative, or healing to them in your classroom? I encourage you to think about specific ideas you might engage media or media habits in your classroom.

    Great work!

Catalog of Critical Creativity

Creating with Words: Blackout Poetry This form of poetry would be exciting to implement into a unit about script analysis. After performing a thorough reading and analysis of a play, the students choose a page of the script to do blackout poetry that illustrates a main theme of the play Creating with Images: Emoji Story An emoji story could be used to assess if students understand the plot to a play we read in class. Additionally, it can be used when rehearsing monologues to show which tactics or actions the student will use with each sentence. Creating with Sounds: Song Catching During a unit on devising, the students research songs by asking their peers outside of class what songs they think of when given a specific theme or emotion. For example, if the devised piece is about over-use of technology, they could ask their friends what songs they think about when they hear the word "FOMO" "anxiety" "techno" or "overwhelming." And then th...

Ode to an Orange

Link to adaptation: https://vm.tiktok.com/43k2BM/ As I read Larry Woiwode's essay the text quickly became my interpretation of the author's words. Images I envisioned, smells I created, and sounds in my head were added to the written text. There were certain elements that stood out to me, and those sections became the text I based my media adaptation off of. The lyrical style of the text prompted me to use TikTok: a social media app I have no experience with, but I knew that it enabled creators to be artistic with their postings. My process began by researching TikTok by exploring different functions. I discovered that I could upload various photos and choose from a variety of transitions to display my photos. Ode to an Orange moves to many different ideas quickly, so an episodic style slideshow sounded like a great fit for my adaptation. After enlisting the aid of my brother, I took pictures that captured impactful elements from the text including: "Mom, we think we...

Medium Specificity

For this assignment, I used an app called "Drawing Desk" from the Apple App Store. I used my iPhone and drew with my finger. I started by exploring the app, determining its functions and capabilities. Most of the content was locked and required purchase to access the full app. In the sketching portion of the app, I discovered that I could use a variety of drawing tools like pen, pencil, crayon, marker, and paint brush. I was also able to select colors from a color wheel and save the hue I wanted: I could adjust the tone, intensity, and value of the colors. Finally, I could use a ruler or stencils to create circles or straight lines. These affordances allowed me to choose multiple colors to create contrast and depth to a drawing. I decided to start with a base color and then layer warm colors to add texture. Then I used cool colors and circle stencils. This media showcases the specific color choices and different drawing tools that are available. One of the paintbrush sty...
